Every year we like to head to the big smoke to see what the capital has to offer at the UK’s leading independent design festival. The event takes place annually in EC1 London, the heart and home of design. This year marked the Clerkenwell Design Week’s 10th Anniversary – so, alongside the usual jaw-dropping design showrooms, exhibitions, talks and events – the event this year was glowing, quite literally, with giant, customised beacons displayed through the entire area.
Over the past decade we’ve seen Clerkenwell become the area it is today, known for it’s ground breaking creativity as the design epicentre of London. We’re always keen to see what each year has to offer and this year did not disappoint! As Wylde girls Hanna, Nerys and Amy checked out some of the showrooms last Wednesday at the UK’s leading independent design festival, here’s what was on offer over the entire week;
Due to the popularity of the exhibitions in previous years , the 2019 CDW exhibitions had been meticulously refined into seven displays with specific themes. The focal points ranged from lighting, luxury, the best of British, emerging talents and international power brands including the likes of Benchmark, Bute Fabrics, Creation Baumann, Dowsing and Reynolds, Protocol and many others.
We particularly liked the international contemporary design exhibition; Design Fields and Platform A the location for spotting up and coming design talent. Elements was a display we spotted last year which is striking exhibition of ironmongery, hardware, switch plates and architectural decorations within a street-market style pavilion.
Another display we found last year which was also back by popular demand this year is Light – the illumination installation station! Hosted in the world renowned nightclub Fabric, this is where the top international lighting brands really do shine!
Amy managed to sneak in an afternoon at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show – it took over 8,000 people to put this years show on and it was glorious! This year some of the highlights including the Donkey Sanctuary (complete with donkeys!) and the real life treehouse, but our favourite installation was The McQueens Flowers Per Oculus Apum show – meaning Through the Eyes of Bees, a bumble bee’s paradise!
